Expert Concept: The Climbing Grade Pyramid is a visual representation of your climbing volume. A healthy pyramid prevents injury and ensures a solid foundation before moving to the next grade.
How to Calculate Your Climbing Grade Pyramid
To climb harder, you don't necessarily need more finger strength; you might just need a better pyramid.
What is a Grade Pyramid?
A pyramid is a count of your sends over a specific period, usually a season or a year. The rule of thumb for a solid base is:
- 1 peak send at grade x
- 2 sends at grade x-1
- 4 sends at grade x-2
- 8 sends at grade x-3
Why It Matters
If your pyramid looks like a pillar, for example one V8 send but zero V7s and zero V6s, you are at a high risk of injury. You haven't developed the movement patterns or connective tissue strength required for that grade level.
How GoClimbr Automates the Calculation
Manually tallying these numbers is a chore. GoClimbr's analytics engine automatically generates your pyramid in real time. It highlights gaps in your pyramid in red, suggesting that you spend your next session filling the base rather than projecting at your limit.
The Formula for Progression
- Identify weaknesses in your foundation.
- Reduce injury risk by building volume.
- Visualize your path to the next grade.
